Summertime and the air is clean
Jindabyne 2011/12 is the gateway to the Snowy Mountains, and has therefore
long been a popular place to book jindabyne accommodation. Once
the snow melts and the winter crowds are gone, Jindabyne provides plenty of
summer activities for the visitor. There are loads of adventure based options,
activities that showcase the area’s natural beauty and a few other unique
sites.
Mountain Biking

The hills of the Snowy Mountains provide some great mountain biking trails
once the snow has thawed. There are even some great biking options in the heart
of Jindabyne, so one doesn’t even need to go that far. One can enjoy the
outdoors and its natural beauty with a pleasant ride alongside Lake Jindabyne.
Wherever and however one chooses to ride around the Jindabyne area, mountain
biking stores such as Sacred Ride in Jindabyne can assist in renting bikes and
can also arrange bike tours.
It is worth taking a ride on the new “Shared Bike Trail” which stretches from Tyrolean Village to the dam wall. In the near future this exciting trail will continue right through the town to the Snowline Caravan Park!
Hiking
Kosciuszko National Park is the predominant national park in the Jindabyne
area, and also contains Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko. Climbing
it is naturally a feat that many adventurers will aspire to. Australian
National Park authorities from New South Wales, the Australian Capital
Territory and Victoria have co-operated to cohesively manage protected alpine
areas across this region. This authority is known as the Australian Alps
National Parks, and their website is a good source for information on trails in
the region and how best to prepare for a hike. Another benefit of this
co-operation is that incredibly, a 650 kilometre walking track through multiple
adjoining national parks has been established, and it runs from Victoria,
through New South Wales, and right up to Canberra.
There are a number of great hiking companies such as K7 and Paddy Palin who supply all your needs.
Horse Riding
Australians are intrigued by the romantic notion of the title character of
Banjo Patterson’s famous 1890 poem “The Man From Snowy River”, a daring and
brave horse rider. Movies and television series have perpetuated the legend.
For visitors to this region, one can get a feel for the lives of stockmen of
Banjo Patterson’s day, by jumping in the saddle to explore. Pender Lea is one
such location where horse riders can enjoy thousands of acres of beautiful
natural alpine scenery. Alternatively, the Jindabyne Equestrian Resort has some
great riding facilities, and also offers trail rides from two hours to
overnight camping trips.
Water Sports
How is this for an array of water based options in the Jindabyne area:
Sailing, Kayaking, Wind Surfing, Paddle Boarding, Water Skiing, Wake Boarding,
Black water diving, Swimming and even Dragon Boating as part of February’s
Flowing Festival. That’s a whole lot of excitement, but if many of these sound
like they require expending far too much energy, then why not enjoy being on
the lake in a leisurely fashion.
Fly fishing is popular and experienced operators like Steve Williamson’s
Trout Fishing Adventures and High Country Outfitters offer tours and also
casting lessons. The former can also guide on other fishing techniques like
boat trolling, lure spinning and live bait fishing. The good news for those
fishing on Lake Jindabyne is that the lake is at its highest level since 2001.
Snowy Hydro Visitor And Education Centre
Not too far from Jindabyne is this Cooma based centre. The Snowy Mountains
Scheme was an incredible engineering feat, and took 25 years to complete. It
now provides hydroelectricity and water for irrigation, and its amazing story
is captured here at this centre.
Plenty More
Avid fisherman may be interested in the breeding of their catch, and can
find out at the Garden Trout Hatchery. Additional tours such as Stone Bridge
Tours, and those taking in the Snowy Wilderness are available, and one can
certainly cap off a great day with a celebratory drink at the Wild Brumby
Schnapps Distillery.
This dazzling array of choices shows that there’s so much more to Jindabyne
than the snow. This beautiful region can equally be enjoyed during summer, with
no shortage of activities available. Booking thredbo
accommodation is another option for staying in the region and being close
to all these great activities.
